UT Tower Garden

In 1966, Charles Whitman rocked the nation's psyche by committing the first act of public domestic violence from the tower of the University of Texas Campus. In 2000, President Faulkner renamed the open space south of the Biology Building, The Tower Garden. The garden was to be redeveloped as a healing place to commemorate the victims of the Whitman killings. An advisory group was appointed to determine design guidelines for the garden. Ms. McKinney was selected as the Project Landscape Architect. In 2001, Jill Bedgood was selected as the Memorial Artist to collaborate in the garden design. The memorial will be the first Public Art project commissioned by the University.
